Recently, Rosatom said that if atomproekt, a Russian nuclear power plant planner, can prove that the bn-1200 fast reactor is competitive, it will decide whether to build a demonstration plant at beloyarsk nuclear power plant site in 2022. It is understood that the bn-1200 fast reactor planning and development work will be completed by the end of 2021, and the production work can be launched in 2025.
In November 2019, Rosatom executives said that under the same installed capacity, the production cost of fast reactor and vvwe unit is equivalent.
At present, there are two sodium cooled fast reactors in operation in beloyarski nuclear power plant in Russia, i.e. No.3 and No.4 units, which are planned by bn-600 and BN-800 respectively.
In 2015, the Russian government announced that the construction plan of the bn-1200 unit would be postponed to at least 2020 because rosenergiotom, the nuclear power plant operator, said that it needed to upgrade the fast reactor fuel and verify the economic feasibility of the project. Previously, the company plans to produce two bn-1200 units at the beloyarski plant site, and complete the commercial operation of the units in 2025. However, the final production plan shall be based on the pilot operation results of beloyarski unit 4 (BN-800), which will start commercial operation in October 2016.
