How to choose a suitable partial discharge detection device for oneself

:2025-12-22 13:36:24:

Digital partial discharge detector is a precise electronic instrument designed to detect internal partial discharge phenomena in high-voltage electrical equipment. Its core function lies in capturing and analyzing the pulse signals generated by discharge, thereby assessing the insulation status of the equipment and preventing safety accidents caused by insulation failures. To select a suitable digital partial discharge detector, a comprehensive evaluation should be conducted from four dimensions: technical parameter adaptability, functional requirement matching, environmental adaptability and reliability, as well as cost-effectiveness and scalability. The following provides a detailed analysis:

1. Technical parameter adaptability

① Matching of detection principle

Ultra-high frequency (UHF) method: Applicable to enclosed equipment such as GIS and cable terminals, with a frequency band covering 300-1500 MHz, capable of capturing high-frequency discharge signals.

Ultrasonic (AE) method: suitable for open equipment such as switchgear and transformers, with sensitivity ≥60dB (V/(m/s)), detection frequency band of 20kHz~60kHz, and the ability to locate discharge points.

Pulse current method: It is suitable for type testing of equipment such as transformers and cables, with a detection sensitivity up to 0.002pC and a sample capacitance coverage ranging from 6pF to 250μF.

② Sensitivity and resolution

The equipment needs to detect discharge amounts as low as 50pC and support phase resolution (PRPD/PRPS spectra) to distinguish between types such as corona and floating discharge.

③ Dynamic range

It is necessary to cover the discharge intensity that may occur during equipment operation, such as the limit value of 10-100pC for switchgear and the limit value of ≤10pC for cables.

2. Matching degree of functional requirements

① Core functions

Display parameters such as discharge amplitude, phase, and frequency in real-time, support alarm threshold setting, self-checking, data storage, and discharge source localization.

It possesses data storage and playback functions, and can generate standard test reports.

② Extended functions

Supports multi-parameter monitoring (such as temperature and humidity), remote communication (RS485, Ethernet, wireless transmission), and networking capabilities.

It possesses diagnostic analysis capabilities (such as a discharge type recognition rate of ≥80%) and trend prediction.

3. Environmental adaptability and reliability: ensuring stable operation of equipment

① Temperature and humidity range

The equipment needs to adapt to a working environment with a temperature range of -10℃ to 45℃ and a relative humidity of ≤95% (without condensation).

② Protection level and electromagnetic compatibility

The protection level should be ≥IP54, and it should possess anti-electromagnetic interference capability.

③ Endurance and installation method

Portable devices need to support 4-5 hours of continuous operation and come equipped with a dedicated charger.

Select the installation method based on the scenario. For new projects, panel-mounted equipment can be chosen, which supports commissioning without power outages. For existing equipment, maintenance windows should be reserved, and non-invasive sensor installation is supported.

4. Cost-effectiveness and scalability: balancing performance and budget

① Cost-effectiveness evaluation

Avoid solely pursuing low prices or high specifications. It is necessary to conduct a comprehensive evaluation that takes into account equipment performance, after-sales service, and long-term value.

② Consideration of scalability

Give priority to devices that are scalable and have strong compatibility, to adapt to future technological advancements.

ZC-254B Three channel partial discharge detector is a new digital liquid crystal display partial discharge detector developed by our company to solve the problems of low brightness and short service life of the oscilloscope tube of the traditional partial discharge instrument. The instrument has the advantages of high detection sensitivity of mature products, large sample capacitance coverage, wide range of applicable samples, complete input units (detection impedance) and multiple frequency band combinations (nine kinds). The operation, structure and installation form are fully compatible with previous models, which is convenient for the upgrading of existing system equipment.
